Trying to get my head around app.net, found this in @ricmac's post, "So what is App.net? It's a self-described "social feed" service - a.k.a. a microblogging service. It's unclear at this point if this is a service many consumers will actually want. App.net is more likely to find success as an infrastructure service for third party developers who need microblogging functionality in their apps."
